Moral philosophy on the threshold of modernity by Jill Kraye( )

16 editions published in 2005 in English and Undetermined and held by 486 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"This volume investigates the paradigm changes which occurred in ethics during the early modern era (1350-1600). While many general claims have been made regarding the nature of moral philosophy in the period of transition from medieval to modern thought, the rich variety of extant texts has seldom been studied and discussed in detail. The present collection attempts to do this. It provides new research on ethics in the context of Late Scholasticism, Neo-Scholasticism, Renaissance Humanism and the Reformation. It traces the fate of Aristotelianism and of Stoicism, explores specific topics such as probabilism and casuistry, and highlights the connections between Protestant theology and early modern ethics. The book also examines how the origins of human rights, as well as different views of moral agency, the will and the emotions, came into focus on the eve of modernity." "Target audience: students of medieval, Renaissance and Reformation history; students of the history of philosophy, ethics and theology; those interested in humanism, human rights and the history of law."--Jacket
The Pastoral Epistles with Philemon & Jude by Risto Saarinen( Book )

9 editions published in 2008 in English and held by 377 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"The Brazos Theological Commentary on the Bible enlists leading theologians to read and interpret scripture creedally for the twenty-first century, just as the church fathers, the Reformers, and other orthodox Christians did for their times and places. The Pastoral Epistles with Philemon & Jude is the seventh volume in the series. This commentary, like each in the series, is designed to serve the church - through aid in preaching, teaching, study groups, and so forth - and demonstrate the continuing intellectual and practical viability of theological interpretation ofthe Bible."--BOOK JACKET
Weakness of will in Renaissance and Reformation thought by Risto Saarinen( Book )

16 editions published in 2011 in English and held by 358 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Weakness of will, the phenomenon of acting contrary to one's own better judgment, has remained a prominent discussion topic of philosophy. In addition to considering the work of a broad range of Renaissance authors (including Petrarch, Donato Acciaiuoli, John Mair, and Francesco Piccolomini), Risto Saarinen explores the theologically coloured debates of the Reformation period, such as those provided by Martin Luther, Philip Melanchthon, John Calvin, and Lambert Daneau. He goes on to discuss the impact of these authors on prominent figures of early modernity, including Shakespeare, Descartes, Spinoza, and Leibniz. While most of the historical research on weakness of will has focused on the reception history of Aristotle's Nicomachean Ethics, Saarinen pays attention to the Platonic and Stoic discussions and their revival during the Renaissance and the Reformation. He also shows the ways in which Augustine's discussion of the divided will is intertwined with the Christian reception of ancient Greek ethics, and argues that the theological underpinnings of early modern authors do not rule out weakness of will, but transform the philosophical discussion and lead it towards new solutions

"God and the Gift is the first systematic account of the theology of giving, receiving, and the gift. It employs material from the contemporary debate in the humanities (Mauss, Godbout, Derrida, Marion) and ecumenical theology (Lumen Gentium, Catholic-Lutheran Joint Declaration, Anglican-Catholic Gift of Authority, John Milbank, Dorothea Wendebourg, Margaret O'Gara) but is basically an original attempt to build an ecumenical theology of forgiveness, thanksgiving and sacrifice, worship and the Eucharist proceeding from the theme of divine giving/self-giving."--Jacket
