Indiqué sur la jaquette : À la fin des années 1980, après dix ans d'exil européen, Robert Kramer et Doc (Paul McIsaac) retournent aux États-Unis : non pas chez eux mais à leurs origines, comme il est précisé dès le départ. Ils suivent la "Route One" qui longe la côte Est de la frontière canadienne à la Floride, la route qui relie les États fondateurs. De rencontres en solitudes, une odyssée géographique, humaine et culturelle aux dimensions uniques. Parler d'hybridation entre fiction et documentaire serait ignorer la dynamique d'un film déployé au-delà de toute catégorie. À partir du dialogue entre Kramer, qui tourne lui-même chaque image, et l'insaisissable Doc, personnage ébauché puis développé par McIsaac dans "Ice" (1969) et "Doc's Kingdom" (1986), se développe une structure rhapsodique et polyphonique au service, non pas d'une synthèse, mais d'un portrait complexe de la nation américaine dont la "Route One" propose, de manière presque littérale, un plan de coupe. On y saisit la pluralité géographique et la géologie culturelle d'un pays gorgé de mémoire, bâti sur les spectres du génocide des indiens, de l'esclavage et de la guerre civile, peuplé par les fous de Dieu et les vaudous, les entrepreneurs et les clochards. Ce voyage traverse également le cinéma tout entier : d'entretiens sobrement filmés en captations abstraites de l'activité urbaine, "Route One USA" visite chaque forme cinématographique pour mieux la renouveler
