Changing difference : queer politics and shifting identities : Peter Hujar, Mark Morrisroe, Jack Smith ( Book )
4 editions published in 2012 in 3 languages and held by 82 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
The exhibition 'Changing Difference' and the accompanying publication aim to explore the work of three New-York based artists, image-makers and underground cultural agents: Peter Hujar (1934-1987), Mark Morrisroe (1959-1989) and Jack Smith (1932-1989) all occupying that uncertain territory lying between the visibility and the assimilation of 'difference'. Their works follow a complex parable, from the '60s right up to the end of the '80s, underlining the risks inherent in mixing art and life, as well as formal research and political struggles. Their research will accompany the spectator along an itinerary ranging from highbrow to lowbrow art, from the banal to the elegiac, from the trashy to the refined, and from life to death, moving through both the various genders (male, female and transgender) and sexual orientations (heterosexuality, homosexuality and bisexuality), showing how they have been recounted through both underground and mainstream culture. 0Exhibition: Galleria Civica, Modena, Italy (20.10.2012-27.1.2013)

These pictures provide us with a glipse of a New York that has all but disappeared, one populated by the late-night demimonde, curbing cobblestones, and landfills before the coming of Battery Park City. Hujar left behind his own unique record of a worls now lost, in a time before AIDS and a downtown before gentrification.--[Source inconnue]

"- Les émeutes de Stonewall célébrées sous le nom de Christopher Street Day (CSD) furent une série de conflits violents entre d'une part les homosexuels et les transgenres, et d'autre part les forces de police de New York. La première nuit d'émeute eut lieu le 28 juin 1969, après une descente de huit policiers dans le "Stonewall Inn" un bar gay situé sur Christopher Street, au cœur du Greenwich Village. Stonewall est souvent considéré comme le tournant du mouvement de demande d'égalité des droits homosexuels

"The nine stories told by this exhibition concern the meeting of a photographer and an artist. Their collaboration was sometimes one-off, sometimes it would last for years, but it always resulted in common fruit: a work of art, a process, a shared world. We are interested in the working experience of these 'accomplices,' and how their collaboration shaped the work that was being created"--P. 8
