When the chance discovery of an ancient cryptogram reveals a path to the Underworld, the adventurous Professor Otto Liedenbrock sets off to Iceland, determined to reach the centre of the earth. But nothing can prepare him and his nephew Axel for what they will find beneath the ground; measureless caverns and vast subterranean seas reveal all of the earth's known history and more, while dinosaurs do battle, giant men herd mastodons and danger and excitement wait around every corner
20,000 leagues under the sea by Jules Verne( Book )

93 editions published between 1866 and 2017 in 9 languages and held by 326 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

57 editions published between 1860 and 2006 in French and German and held by 146 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Five weeks in a balloon : a journey of discovery by three Englishmen in Africa by Jules Verne( )

21 editions published between 1874 and 2017 in 7 languages and held by 98 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Initially published in 1863, Five Weeks in a Balloon was the first novel in what would become Jules Verne's Extraordinay Voyages series. It tells the tale of a 4,000-mile balloon trip over the mysterious continent of Africa, a trip that wouldn't actually take place until well into the next century. Fusing adventure, comedy, and science fiction, Five Weeks has all the key ingredients of classic Verne: sly humor and cheeky characters, an innovative scientific invention, a tangled plot that's full of suspense and surprise, and visions of an unknown realm. As part of the Early Classics of Science Fiction series, this critical edition features extensive notes, all the illustrations from the original French version, and a complete Verne biography and bibliography."--Jacket
The world before the deluge by Louis Figuier( Book )

19 editions published between 1863 and 2007 in 3 languages and held by 88 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Louis Figuier (1819–94) was destined to remain in academia until disagreements with fellow scholars led him to abandon this path and instead pursue 'the idea that scientific knowledge, which until then had been almost exclusively the property of the learned, should be put within the reach of the reading public'. Published in 1863, La Terre avant le déluge became a classic of popular science and introduced palaeontology to a wider readership; that this English translation appeared only two years later is an indication of its impact. Figuier wrote that his aim was 'to trace the progressive steps by which the earth has reached its present state … and to describe the various convulsions and transformations through which it has successively passed'. The book was also celebrated for its inclusion of more than 200 illustrations by a pupil of Doré, Édouard Riou (1833–1900), who became famous as Jules Verne's illustrator a few years later
Five weeks in a balloon : a voyage of exploration and discovery in Central Africa by Jules Verne( )

5 editions published between 1870 and 1890 in English and held by 85 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Jules Verne's "Five Weeks in a Balloon" is a satire of the myriad books on African travel contemporary with its publication - although so far as the landscape, inhabitants, animals, and features of the countries are described, it is completely accurate. An abundantly amusing and interesting tale, this is a book that will entertain a wide range of readers, and one that would make for a worthy addition to any bookshelf
