OPERATIONAL ASPECTS OF HIGH POWER ENERGY RECOVERY LINACS( )

1 edition published in 2006 in English and held by 5 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

We have been operating a high-power energy-recovery linac (ERL) at Jefferson Lab for several years. In the process we have learned quite a bit about both technical and physics limitations in high power ERLs. Several groups are now considering new ERLs that greatly increase either the energy, the current or both. We will present some of our findings on what to consider when designing, building, and operating a high power ERL. Our remarks for this paper are limited to lattice design and setup, magnets, vacuum chamber design, diagnostics, and beam stability
LONGITUDINAL PHASE SPACE CHARACTERIZATION OF ELECTRON BUNCHES AT THE JLAB FEL FACILITY( )

1 edition published in 2006 in English and held by 5 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

We report longitudinal phase space measurements of short electron bunches at the 10kW Free-Electron Laser Facility at Jefferson Lab using broadband synchrotron radiation and a remotely controlled fast streak camera. Accurate measurements are possible because the optical transport system uses only reflective components that do not introduce dispersion. The evolution of longitudinal phase space of the electron beam can be observed in real time while phases of accelerator RF components are being adjusted. This fast and efficient diagnostic enhances the suite of machine setup tools available to JLab FEL operators and applies to other accelerators. The results for certain beam setups will be presented

PHASE NOISE COMPARISON OF SHORT PULSE LASER SYSTEMS( )

1 edition published in 2006 in English and held by 5 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This paper describes phase noise measurements of several different laser systems that have completely different gain media and configurations including a multi-kW free-electron laser. We will focus on state-of-the-art short pulse lasers, especially drive lasers for photocathode injectors. Phase noise comparison of the FEL drive laser, electron beam and FEL laser output also will be presented
XTREME OPTICS : the behavior of cavity optics for the Jefferson Lab free-electron laser( )

1 edition published in 2006 in English and held by 5 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The cavity optics within high power free-electron lasers based on energy-recovering accelerators are subjected to extreme conditions associated with illumination from a broad spectrum of radiation, often at high irradiances. This is especially true for the output coupler, where absorption of radiation by both the mirror substrate and coating places significant design restrictions to properly manage heat load and prevent mirror distortion. Besides the fundamental lasing wavelength, the mirrors are irradiated with light at harmonics of the fundamental, THz radiation generated by the bending magnets downstream of the wiggler, and x-rays produced when the electron beam strikes accelerator diagnostic components (e.g., wire scanners and view screens) or from inadvertent beam loss. The optics must reside within high vacuum at ~ 10-8 Torr and this requirement introduces its own set of complications. This talk discusses the performance of numerous high reflector and output coupler optics assemblies and provides a detailed list of lessons learned gleaned from years of experience operating the Upgrade IR FEL, a 10 kW-class, sub-ps laser with output wavelength from 1 to 6 microns
Harmonic Lasing Characterization at Jefferson Lab( )

1 edition published in 2006 in English and held by 5 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Harmonic lasing is normally suppressed because of lasing at the fundamental wavelength. It can, however, be achieved by using any of several methods that suppress fundamental lasing. In this paper we discuss two methods used at Jefferson Lab. The first is to use the characteristics of dielectric coatings to allow harmonic lasing at cavity lengths longer than the synchronous length for the fundamental. The second is to use a dielectric coating that has little reflectivity at the fundamental. This allows us to directly compare fundamental and harmonic lasing with the same optical resonator and electron beam. We present measurement carried out at Jefferson Lab using the IR Upgrade FEL operating at 0.53, 0.94, 1.04, 1.6, and 2.8 microns in which both schemes are used to produce lasing at both the 3rd and 5th harmonic of the fundamental
