Legal document dated 1 January 1750 (copies of which were likely sent to multiple courthouse towns around the colony), ordering that should anyone encounter Richard Watkins, he should be immediately brought to Charleston, in order to settle his debt of 486 pounds and 13 shillings owed to Edward Fowler: "Greeting. We command you without delay to attack the Body of Richard Watkins ... of Charles Town ... Slaymaker ... so that you [may] compel him to ... appear before our Justices at our Court." Watkins' trade is described as a "Slaymaker" [the craftsman who produced the long wooden batten or slay that slid back and forth during the weaving process to beat up the weft, compact the material and press the yarn firmly into the fell of the cloth]. Verso, the earlier document of 1 January 1750, includes an inscription added, 25 April 1751, by Rawlins Lowndes (1721-1800): "I have endeavored by George Day, my Lawfull Deputy to find the Deb[to]r but Could not I therefore by him left a tran[scribed] copy of the within writ ... with a Notice thereon Indorsed at the most usual and Nortorious place of his Residence pursuant to the Act of Assembly."
