One major outcome of the workshop was the description of several paths of research that may lead to the production of fullerene nanotubes in large quantities. Of these the most ambitious, but almost certainly also the most rewarding was one that came to be called the 'Royal Road.' The beginning of this road is the production of small amounts (grams) of single walled fullerene nanotubes from one of the current methods. The road progresses by developing methods to purify this material, and then to cut these tubes into short pieces. These pieces are then used effectively as seed crystals from which to grow fullerene nanotubes continuously from a hydrocarbon feed gas with the help of a catalyst particle attached at the 'living' end. This path of fullerene nanotube research is the 'Royal Road' because it requires the development of the high science and technology of manipulating individual fullerene nanotube pieces as true molecules. The road is Royal not only because it will lead ultimately to continuous fullerene fibers and cables of custom specified composition, but also because the molecular fullerene nanotube pieces themselves, and the technology of modifying and manipulating them, seem likely to spawn major new technologies along the way

Smalley from Rice University presents a lecture on fullerenes, which are a new class of carbon molecules, the first truly molecular form of pure carbon yet isolated consisting of hollow cages composed of three connected networks of carbon atoms. He describes these "dopant" atoms which may be located either (1) outside the cage, producing fulleride salts, (2) inside the cage, producing a sort of superatom, or (3) as part of the cage itself, replacing one or more of the carbon atoms in the cage network
High Yield Methods for Cutting Single-Walled Carbon Nanotubes( Book )

Methods for cutting single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) to controlled lengths for material, biological and electronic applications are being developed. The research aims at establishing scalable cutting processes for preparing high quality short SWNTs with high yield, systematic procedure for evaluating the cutting results, and effective, scalable methods for length sorting of cut SWNTs. Caro's acid has been studied and chosen as the finishing cutting reagent. High temperature fluorination plus Caro's acid have been developed as our primary cutting method. Electron beam irradiation of ozonated SWNTs has shown promising cutting result. A standard procedure has been developed to individualize SWNT samples and to determine the length distribution. Preliminary results have indicated that phase separation technique could be a scalable, efficient means for length sorting of SWNTs. Ultra-short SWNTs (US-SWNTs) were produced by oxidation in oleum using fuming nitric acid

Poly(p-phenylene benzobisoxazole) (PBO) has been synthesized in the presence of singlewall carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) in poly(phosphoric acid) (PPA) using typical PBO polymerization conditions. PBO and PBO/SWNT lyotropic liquid crystalline solutions in PPA have been spun into fibers using dry-jet wet spinning. The tensile strength of the PBO/SWNT fiber containing 10 wt % SWNTs is about 50% higher than that of the control PBO fibers containing no SWNTs. The structure and morphology of these fibers have been studied

Gallium Arsenide Clusters and their Interfacial Physics and Chemistry( )

Gallium arsenide clusters have been studied on a Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance (FTICR) mass spectrometer with an external supersonic cluster source. Reaction of GaAs cluster cations with ammonia revealed that all cluster cations larger than seven atoms were most reactive near the 1/1 composition ratio of gallium/arsenic. The results suggest that even at this small size, the clusters begin to adopt the alternating gallium/arsenic bonding arrangement characteristic of bulk GaAs crystal surfaces where gallium-arsenic bonding activates gallium atoms for ammonia chemisorption. With excess NH3, GaAsy (NH3)z(+) with the same GaAs composition (x and y) was observed with several values of z, which is explained in terms of the existence of multiple isomers of GaAs clusters. However, the anions were found to be inert toward NH3. Nitric oxide was found to etch singly charged GaxAsy (x + y = 9 to 16) clusters. A pronounced even-odd alternation in cluster ion reactivity towards NO was observed with the odd numbered cluster ions which are believed to be closed shell singlets being much less reactive than the even numbered cluster ions which are of necessity open shell species. The local density calculations of small GaxAsy (x + y <10) have been carried out. Multiple low energy structures were found, and the electronic properties are in agreement with experimental results
Supersonic Beam Observations of Semiconductor Clusters( Book )

The principal thrust of the research carried out during this grant has been concerned with the study of cluster beam spectroscopy of semiconducting elements such as silicon and germanium, as well as III-V semiconductors, such as GaxAsy based on rapid advances in the art of generating and probing supersonic cluster beams developed by one of the principal investigators (R.E.S.) at Rice University. This approach allows the study of small, bare clusters in the high vacuum of a molecular beam apparatus in much the same way that the more conventional type of surface science uses perfect single crystals in an ultra high vacuum surface machine. In both cases the object of study is a highly idealized model of the real polycrystalline surfaces of practical importance, but in the case of the clusters beam approach, this model has the advantage of a far more immediate connection to high level ab initio theory. It can be argued that cluster beam techniques are a means of getting away from the macroscopic, low symmetry aspects of surfaces and bringing surface science experiments into the microscopic, molecular realm ideal for theory. Although there have been substantial studies of metal and rare gas clusters, only recently attention has begun to focus on clusters of semiconductor elements
