The roots of old Chinese by Laurent Sagart( )

16 editions published between 1999 and 2004 in English and Chinese and held by 1,548 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The phonology, morphology and lexicon of late Zhou Chinese are examined in this volume. It is argued that a proper understanding of Old Chinese morphology is essential in correctly reconstructing the phonology. Based on evidence from word-families, modern dialects and related words in neighboring languages, Old Chinese words are claimed to consist of a monosyllabic root, to which a variety of derivational affixes attached. This made Old Chinese typologically more like modern languages such as Khmer, Gyarong or Atayal, than like Middle and modern Chinese, where only faint traces of the old morphology remain. In the first part of the book, the author proposes improvements to Baxter's system of reconstruction, regarding complex initials and rhymes, and then reviews in great detail the Old Chinese affixal morphology. New proposals on phonology and morphology are integrated into a coherent reconstruction system. The second part of the book consists of etymological studies of important lexical items in Old Chinese. The author demonstrates in particular the role of proportional analogy in the formation of the system of personal pronouns. Special attention is paid to contact phenomena between Chinese and neighboring languages, and unlike most literature on Sino-Tibetan the author identifies numerous Chinese loanwords into Tibeto-Burman. The book, which contains a lengthy list of reconstructions, an index of characters and a general index, is intended for linguists and cultural historians, as well as advanced students

"One of the most dynamic research areas in the prehistory of the East Asian region is the synthesis of archaeology, linguistics and genetics. Several countries have only recently been opened to field research and highly active local groups have made possible a raft of collaborative studies which would have been impossible a decade ago. This book presents an overview of the most recent findings in these fields."--Jacket

Ōgami éléments de description d'un parler du Sud des Ryukyu by Thomas Pellard( Book )

2 editions published between 2009 and 2014 in French and held by 4 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This dissertation is a linguistic description of the Ogami dialect of Miyako Ryukyuan, an endangered Japonic language of the Southern Ryukyus. The data have been collected by the author during fieldwork. Ogami has a relatively small-sized phoneme inventory. It has the very rare characteristic of allowing syllables and words without vowels nor any other voiced sound. Previous analyses positing devoiced vowels in the nucleus of such syllables are refuted on the basis of acoustic and morphophonological evidence. The different word classes, case markers and pragmatic role markers, as well as their morphology, are described in several chapters. An overview of the syntax of the noun phrase and the sentence is given. Special attention is paid to the clause chaining system and desubordination of converbs: some converbs have acquired the ability to head independent sentences, with, for example, a past tense value. This is followed by several chapters on diachronic issues. First, a phylogenetic classification of the Ryukyuan languages and then of the Miyako dialects is proposed. The phonology, noun morphology and verbal system of proto-Miyako are then reconstructed on the basis of data from five dialects. Proto-Miyako is compared to Japanese and several contributions to the reconstruction of proto-Japonic are proposed

L'isolat mandarin de Ganzhou by Jiwon Byun( Book )

2 editions published between 2004 and 2011 in French and held by 3 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This study provides a linguistic analysis of the dialect isolate of Ganzhou. This study suggests that, contrary to the widely accepted hypothesis, the immigration that took place in mid-16th century to Ganzhou because of the regional economic prosperity had a significant impact on the genesis of this dialect. This happened probably during the Ming period. In order to support these suggestions, several different analyses were used in this study. First, the synchronic analysis shows that the grammatical properties of the dialect of Ganzhou are very similar to those of the Southern Mandarins. Secondly, the diachronic analysis reveals a very strong similarity between the Ganzhou dialect and the Ming/Qing koine. Finally, the results from the comparative analysis conducted with the help of the shared innovations method show that the Ganzhou dialect belongs to the same sub-group as the dialects of Liuzhou, Nanjing, and the Guanhua koine of the Ming/Qing period

Description de la langue Menya : phonologie et syntaxe by Yang Gao( Book )

1 edition published in 2015 in French and held by 2 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This thesis presents a comprehensive description of a dialect of Western Menya ('mqpe) spoken in the Dar.rtse.mdo (Kangding) county, Sichuan Province, China.Menya has 8 vocalic phonemes and 46 consonantal phonemes. The contrast between the non-RTR vowels and RTR vowels is attested. Vowel harmony of these two sorts of vowels is manifested in a fairly common way that can affect not only the lexical level, but also the morphological level. As for the consonant system, with vowel harmony, the uvulars are analyzed as allophones of the velars. Morphological tonal alternation shows that there are two underlying tones (High and Low) in monosyllabic words, while being neutralized and surfacing as high falling in citation form. Our data also confirm that in polysyllabic words, only the first or the second syllable can receive a high tone. Morphosyntactic-wise, a presentation on nominal and verbal morphology is made in the first place. The Menya language demonstrates a system with several integrative case forms with different functions, such as ergative marking, possessive marking and dative marking. In the verbal system, Menya exhibits two types of vowel alternations : the first type involves orientational prefixes affected by causative prefixes /- and u-, and the mark of third person agent (3A) u-; and the second type the verbal stems with person marking. We also made a preliminary description of sentence patterns including relative clauses, complement clauses, comparative constructions and different sorts of clauses linking
