Ce livre parle d'objets quotidiens, ces objets qui habitent notre vie ordinaire, qui meublent notre monde vécu de tous les jours. Ces objets que souvent nous ne "voyons" même plus, tant ils semblent solidaires et presque en communion avec l'univers qui nous entoure. L'objet est au centre de l'agir humain, médiateur actif de l'appropriation du monde par les individus. Or, trop souvent, sa nature performative passe au second plan, son pouvoir configurant est oublié, voire nié. L'objet est perçu et conçu comme "déjà là", comme une simple chose qui ne pose problème qu'en termes d'utilisation et de raison instrumentale. La signification des objets quotidiens n'est jamais donnée d'avance. Ce ne sont pas des caractéristiques intrinsèques qui en déterminent le sens, mais plutôt le fait qu'ils soient inscrits dans les pratiques routinières de la vie quotidienne.
