Swiss Corporate Social Innovation in Holcim and Nestlé : Generating Community-Based Initiatives and Value-Creation in Brazil and Ecuador by Rocío Robinson( )

2 editions published in 2016 in English and held by 3 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Once largely the domain of public policy and developmental economics, more and more Multinationals (MNCs) are embarking in Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiatives that address education, health, and low-income community issues in the developing world. At the core of the CSR debate is the idea that corporations should transition from a state of mere compliance to a more active form of engagement: from harm minimization to value creation (Luetkenhorst 2004). Political CSR (Scherer and Palazzo 2011) highlights how firms increasingly provide public goods, and shape local and global business laws and regulations - thereby adapting beyond an instrumental role of CSR by becoming political actors themselves and sometimes filling the void left by the absence of local governance. The ways that firms contribute to their stakeholder communities is the major focus of study in this thesis and the research question is: How do Swiss Multinationals and local communities generate strategies and initiatives for joint impact through Corporate Social Responsibility projects in Brazil and Ecuador? Iris Marion Young's "Social Connection Model of Responsibility" provides a framework to work with and elucidate responsible accountability in CSR community projects since she states that "all agents who contribute by their actions to the structural processes that produce injustice have responsibilities to work to remedy these injustices" (2006, 102). Three comparative, qualitative, case studies detailing Nestlé's Bottom of the Pyramid micro-distribution system in São Paolo, Holcim's community engagement projects in Brazil, and the cross-sector partnerships of the Alianza Suiza in Ecuador serve as the units of analysis to build upon Young's Social Connection Model. Corporate Community Involvement (CCI) proves to be a commendable form of governance and corporate strategy to make a substantial contribution to education and social inclusion
Situated attention : exploring strategic responses to emergent issues in transnational environments by Rachel E Brooks-Ames( )

3 editions published in 2016 in English and held by 3 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Latin America in the WTO : Participation and Influence in Multilateral Trade Diplomacy by Juan Fernando Palacio Roldán( )

2 editions published in 2016 in English and held by 3 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This dissertation studies the participation of Latin American countries in the World Trade Organization (WTO). The dissertation explores the functioning of the multilateral trade community and analyzes the work of the diplomatic missions based in Geneva for a period of 20 years (1995-2014). Drawing on an extensive ethnography to actors of the diplomatic community and on archival data, the dissertation unveils the factors behind effective member participation in the multilateral trade system. Common wisdom suggests that relative power in the international system is what explains the influence of states in International Organizations (IOs). Yet the evidence gathered in this dissertation shows that diplomatic representation is equally as important as relative power for explaining participation and influence in IOs. This interdisciplinary work makes a contribution to the field of International Relations, IO studies, and WTO scholarship, and can be useful to readers interested in Latin America's foreign policy. It may serve as reference to governments, the private sector, and civil society to assess member performance in the WTO, and to promote better practices
The assets of the "poor": rural indigenous livelihoods and their exemplar strategy to overcome scarcity - "Pos, nomás con lo "poco" que tenemos, todo lo que hemos logrado" by Carolina Contreras Arias( )

2 editions published in 2017 in English and held by 3 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The Mexican countryside suffers from extreme poverty, marginalization, food insecurity, and natural resource degradation. The socio-political environment, coupled with environmental concerns and gender inequalities demands prompt solutions targeting rural livelihoods and women. This project aims to understand how families manage their assets to improve their living conditions. This was attained using the Sustainable Livelihood Approach (SLA) as analysis framework. Indigenous households in the community of Cuzalapa were compared according to their wellbeing situation (food security and income). The SLA is mainly criticized for: (1) not presenting a clear methodology for the assets evaluation and analysis, (2) overlooking the social capital, and (3) ignoring local cultural traits and intra-family gender dynamics. To overcome this, a methodological approach to evaluate each variable is proposed. Likewise, I included structured social network analysis (SNA) for the social capital evaluation, and undertook an intra-family gender dynamics study. Main findings show that despite the social help programs which represent 20% to 45% of the their income, families are still not able to access education, medical attention, job opportunities, and basic services. This shows the government's inability to provide main goods and services for a great proportion of society. All of the families rely on their social networks to access services, information, and to build resilience. However, not all families have ideal networks. Results suggest that ideal networks are the ones presenting less homophily and a stronger balance between bonding and bridging ties. The improvement of networks strongly depends on the women's participation in activities that reinforce the contact to foreign actors. Yet, the participation degree is limited by the local societal culture concerning gender dynamics. Additionally, families draw upon collective action to overcome ha

1 edition published in 2017 in French and held by 3 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
