The evergreen Chinese bamboo survives even the bitterest of winters. Symbolising integrity and epitomising elegance, it plays a part in many ancient tales. Lin Hwai-min's inspired choreography does not narrate a single bamboo story but draws on many to create an abstract and lyrical piece of dance theatre. Performed by Cloudgate Dance Theatre of Taiwan to melodies improvised by Chinese flute player Huang Sheng-kai and music by Arvo Pärt, the cycle of the seasons unfolds in a series of sections featuring solos, duets, trios and stunning examples of the ensemble-work in which the company excels

Floating on the ground : a portrait of Lin Hwai-min : a documentary( Visual )

1 edition published in 2005 in English and held by 26 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

A beautiful documentary about one of the greatest choreographers, Lin Hwai-min, exploring the influences that fed his style, between Asia and the West. With interviews of the choreographer and testimonies of his dancers -- including the Zurich Ballet Corps -- fed rehearsals in the studio shows, passages of everyday life of the choreographer, this documentary helps to understand its unique approach to dance. Lin Hwai-min tries to sublimate the technique by working around inspiration, urging his dancers to tap their energy in thinking on stage, bypassing the dance itself. This work that focuses as much on the mind as the body requires them to release their energy, building bridges between each movement and understanding what they transmit to the public. A native of Taiwan, Lin Hwai-Min studied there Chinese opera movements then formed to contemporary dance in New York before returning to Taiwan in the 70s, when he received the title of "Choreographer of the 20th century "in Dance Europe and" Best Choreographer "at Lyon Biennial. He is the founder of the Cloud Gate Dance Theatre in Taiwan
Cloud Gate Dance Theatre of Taiwan : songs of the wanderers( Visual )

1 edition published in 2013 in English and held by 25 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Legend has it that "Cloud Gate" is the name of the oldest known dance in China, a ritualistic dance which was supposed to have been performed more than 5,000 years ago. In 1973 the choreographer Lin Hwai-min used this classical name for the company he founded, the Cloud Gate Dance Theatre of Taiwan, which was the first company in the Chinese speaking part of the world to dedicate itself to the modern dance theatre. In the last scene of the piece Songs of the Wanderers, the audience patiently waits while a young man who is lost in thought slowly moves a rake in spiral movements over the stage which is covered in rice. His movements summarise the events on stage of the previous ninety minutes: a mental pilgrimage without beginning and without end
