Constituent structure by Andrew Carnie( )

33 editions published between 2007 and 2010 in English and Undetermined and held by 2,402 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"This book explores the empirical and theoretical aspects of constituent structure in natural language syntax. It surveys a wide variety of functionalist and formalist theoretical approaches, from dependency grammars and Relational Grammar to Lexical Functional Grammar, Head-driven Phrase Structure Grammar, and Minimalism. It describes the traditional tests for constituency and the formal means for representing them in phrase structure grammars, extended phrase structure grammars, X-bar theory, and set-theoretic Bare Phrase Structure. In doing so it provides a clear, thorough, and rigorous axiomatic description of the structural properties of constituent trees."--BOOK JACKET
Formal approaches to function in grammar : in honor of Eloise Jelinek by Andrew Carnie( )

17 editions published in 2003 in English and held by 1,795 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The contributions making up this volume in honor of Eloise Jelinek are written from a formalist perspective that deals with stereotypically functionalist questions about language. Jelinek's pioneering work in formalist syntax has shown that autonomous syntax need not exist in a vacuum. Her work has highlighted the importance of incorporating the effects of discourse and information structure on the syntactic representation. This book aims to invoke Jelinek's work either in substance or spirit. The focus is on Jelinek's influential Pronominal Argument Hypothesis as an ""non-configurational"" leaf
Verb first : on the syntax of verb-initial languages( )

17 editions published in 2005 in English and held by 1,438 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"This collection of papers brings together the most recent crosslinguistic research on the syntax of verb-initial languages. Authors with a variety of theoretical perspectives pursue the questions of how verb-initial order is derived, and how these derivations play into the characteristic syntax of these languages. Major themes in the volume include the role of syntactic category in languages with verb initial order; the different mechanisms of deriving V-initial order; and the universal correlates of the order
The Syntax of the verb initial languages( )

7 editions published in 2000 in English and held by 1,304 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This volume contains 12 chapters on the derivation of and the correlates to verb initial word order. The studies cover such widely divergent languages as Irish, Welsh, Scots Gaelic, Old Irish, and Biblical Hebrew
Irish nouns : a reference guide by Andrew Carnie( )

7 editions published in 2008 in English and held by 1,221 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Presents comprehensive reference on noun declensions in Modern Irish. Provides a systematic and straightforward characterization of nominal paradigms, which also captures important generalizations about the inflection of nouns. Proposes ten declension classes instead of the traditional five and separates off seven major types of plural formation. Provides fully inflected paradigms for 1200 nouns, and a reference list of 10,000 Irish nouns annotated with their new declension class, their plural type and the form of the genitive singular and common case (nominative) plural. Also includes parallel information on the inflection of adjectives and prepositions." "This reference tool will be invaluable not only to language researchers and authors, but to teachers and students of the language, whether they are native speakers or beginners."--Jacket

Pronouns, presuppositions, and hierarchies : the work of Eloise Jelinek in context by Andrew Carnie( Book )

11 editions published between 2013 and 2018 in English and held by 96 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Eloise Jelinek was a leading authority on syntactic and semantic theory, information structure, and several Native American languages (including Lummi, Yaqui, and Navajo). She was one of the very first generative linguists who brought the theoretical implications of the properties of typologically unusual and understudied languages to the forefront of mainstream generative thinking. Jelinek originated the Pronominal Argument Hypothesis the idea that many languages restrict realization of their arguments to pronouns. In other work, Jelinek investigated a broad range of morphological, syntactic and semantic phenomena in understudied and endangered languages. Besides the theoretical value of that work, it was instrumental in providing sophisticated semantic and syntactic documentation for such languages, where description is typically limited to the basic morphophonology and morphosyntax, as well as texts, that form the core of most descriptive work. Thirteen of her most important papers, together with a fourteenth essay previously unpublished, are here collected, each preceded by a short introduction that provides context for the work and evidence of its subsequent influence."--
