Kantata takwa( Visual )

3 editions published between 2008 and 2011 in English and Indonesian and held by 142 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

A non-narrative, Islamic oriented, experimental fiction-documentary musical film, centred on the huge 'Kantata Takwa' pop 'protest concert' held in Jakarta at the Senayan Stadium on 23 June 1990 by some of Indonesia's most important contemporary artists. The former street balladeer and rising superstar, Iwan Fals, joined together with other notable musicians Sawung Jabo and Yockie Suryoprayogo, and with the dissident poet W.S. Rendra, to produce a new musical work which would concentrate the social concerns of these well known artists into a sustained protest against the Suharto New Order state. Both in the 'Kantata Takwa' concert, and in the film, protest songs were combined with songs inspired by devotion to Islam. The concert also included interludes with Rendra reciting his powerful political poetry. After a second concert, in Surabaya, further performances were not permitted for some years. Due to its political content, Kantata Takwa was 18 years in the making, and only released in 2008. Kantata Takwa was originally the name of a collaborative group of performers, which included musician Iwan Fals, his band, poet W.S. Rendra and his theatre group

At the centre of the film is an unlikely friendship between two twelve year old boys - Andri is from a wealthy family, Gempol is from a poor family. Both are deprived in different ways - Andri of the love and attention of his father, Gempol the chance of education and opportunites in life. A bond develops between them and they set out to find Gempol's displaced family. The central theme focusing on the vitality and resourcefulness of the poor embellished with oblique political jokes did not find favour with its Indonesian distributors who quickly withdrew it from cinemas on the grounds that it was uncommercial. The ensuing press controversy in Indonesia probably contributed to its success abroad, bringing it to the attention of the film festival circuit
