Sheherazade is based on the first story of The Thousand and One Nights and danced to music by Rimsky-Korsakov. When it was first staged, with Nijinsky in the role of the Golden Slave, Mikhail Fokine's choreography of the exotic and passionate tale was a huge success. The ballet's triumph was also due to the fabulous set and costume designs of Léon Bakst. This Kirov staging recreates Bakst's designs.
