Work to date on the plasma amplifier and measurement of electron density by microwave methods is summarized. The equations which govern the large signal behavior of beam-type crossed field tubes was formulated. These equations are being programmed for numerical solution on the IBM 704 digital computer. A new mode of wave propagation on finite diameter magnetically focused electron beams was found in the course of studying noise propagation near the potential minimum of a diode. A few of the important properties were explored theoretically. Propagation is not dependent on the electron drift velocity and a preliminary experimental verification was obtained using a plasma-filled waveguide. (Author)
On the detection of ion oscillations in a mercury discharge by Burton D Fried( Book )

The possibility of using a low pressure mercury discharge to detect ion plasma oscillations was examined. It was found that 1) collisions will not interfere with the phenomenon; 2) the current which maintains the discharge will cause the waves to grow (through the two-stream instability) in a time comparable with or less than the oscillation period. Aside from complications caused by the fact that the maximum growth occurs at rather short wavelengths, detection of these waves appears quite feasible. (Author)

The n =! 1, E mode of hydromagnetic wave propagation has been studied in a cylindrical plasma waveguide. Excitation at 1.0, 2.3, and 3.0 megacycles per second was achieved by means of a circular current-carrying loop immersed in the plasma. Magnetic probes, distributed along the length of the waveguide and capable of insertionALONG A RADIUS, WERE USED TO DETERMINE THE RADIAL DEPENDENCE AND DIRECTION OF THE SIGNAL FIELDS AND, HENCE, THE NATURE OF THE PROPAGATING MODE. These probes were also used to detect the propagation of the waves. Measurement of wave velocity was interpreted to yield the ion density in the plasma, and, furthermore, measurement of wave velocity at different intervals after plasma preparation was interpreted to yield the ion density decay rate. Experiments were performed to detect the rotation of the plane of polarization of the signal fields. (Author)

Thermal Excitation of Modes in a Non-Neutral Plasma( Book )

We examine theoretically the thermal fluctuations in a non-neutral plasma, as observed on a segmented electrode surrounding the plasma, using the Nyquist theorem. The fluctuation spectrum is peaked at frequencies which correspond to modes of the plasma. Measurement of these fluctuations and of the input admittance of the plasma in the vicinity of one of the mode resonance can be used to give a completely experimental, and non-destructive, measurement of the plasma temperature. Since some of the modes are negative energy modes and exhibit negative absorption due to the plasma rotation, a direct application of the Nyquist theorems will not give correct results for the non-axisymmetric modes. This problem is circumvented by first calculating the fluctuations in a frame rotating with the plasma and transforming to the laboratory frame. This results in a modification of Nyquist's theorem. The conjecture by Hirschfield and Wachtel that a weak pulse of radiation can trigger the emission of a large delayed burst of coherent electron cyclotron radiation is examined critically. The effect is found to exist when the electrons have a single velocity perpendicular to the magnetic field, but disappears in a thermal equilibrium distribution. (Author)

Experimental observations and theories of pulse stimulated radiation phenomena in plasmas are reviewed. The motions of an ensemble of non-interacting electrons in a magnetic field is considered and it is shown that cyclotron echoes in plasmas can arise out of various types of nonlinearities: (a) energy dependent electron cyclotron frequency, (b) energy dependent electron collision frequency, (c) energy dependent driving force. The similarities and differences with spin and photon echoes is discussed, and several new related phenomena are also described. (Author)
