This paper presents the results of a laboratory study on the effects of the state of ice distribution on the minimum flashover voltage of H.V. insulators. The accumulation of ice and wet snow on electrical lines sometimes leads to the interruption of electricity due to mechanical damages, conductor gapping or insulator flashover. Mechanical damages due to excessive ice or snow accumulation and also interruptions caused by conductor galloping are well-known to line designers and taken into consideration when designing lines. Contrary to this, the effect of ice and wet snow on the withstand voltage of outdoor insulators is less known. A systematic study of ice accretion on energized insulators was undertaken jointly by the Université du Québec à Chicoutimi (UQAC) and the Institut de recherche d'Hydro-Québec (IREQ). One of the objectives of the joint project was the simulation of atmospheric conditions favouring the accumulation of artificial ice similar to that accreted under natural conditions. This paper reports the results of the study and suggests the most severe conditions relating to the highest probability of flashover on ice-covered insulators
