Born entrepreneur? adolescents' personality characteristics and self-employment in adulthood by Jutta Viinikainen( )

2 editions published in 2016 in English and held by 2 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Is there an entrepreneurial personality and does it appear early in life? We provide a new answer on this question by using the so-called Type A behavior traits (Aggression, Leadership, Responsibility, and Eagerness-Energy), measured in childhood and adolescence, and examining their relationship to self-employment propensity in adulthood. Using data from the Young Finns Study linked to the Finnish Longitudinal Employer-Employee Data and the Longitudinal Population Census of Statistics, our results show that the early-life Leadership-dimension is significantly associated with a higher likelihood 1) of becoming self-employed later in life and 2) of being more successful as an entrepreneur, as approximated by sales. Our results also reinforce the prior evidence on the intergenerational transmission of entrepreneurship

The effect of weight on labor market outcomes an application of genetic instrumental variables by Petri Böckerman( Book )

1 edition published in 2016 in English and held by 1 WorldCat member library worldwide

The first stage of the IV models indicate that genetic risk score is a powerful instrument, and the available evidence from the genetics literature is consistent with instrument validity. The results of the IV models indicate weight reduces earnings and employment and increases social income transfers, although we caution that the results are based on small samples, and are sensitive to specification and subsample

Estimating regional differences in returns to education when schooling and location are determined endogenously by Tuomo Suhonen( )

1 edition published in 2010 in English and held by 1 WorldCat member library worldwide

While the growing supply of university skills is known to have agglomerated towards the large centers in Finland, there is no research knowledge available on the development of regional demands. This paper attempts to fill this gap by analyzing regional variation in the private-sector return to university education in Finland for the period 1970 - 2004. In the analysis, we focus on studying 1) whether there are differences in the return to university between different region types, and 2) to what extent can these differences - if they exist - be explained by differences in regional skill supply and unemployment. For the econometric analysis, we use a large register-based dataset constructed by Statistics Finland and an estimation strategy that takes into account the possible nonlinearities in the effects of the regional variables, as well as biases arising from sample selection and endogeneity of education

The effect of weight on labor market outcomes an application of genetic instrumental variables( )

1 edition published in 2016 in English and held by 1 WorldCat member library worldwide

The increase in the prevalence of obesity worldwide has led to great interest in the economic consequences of obesity, but valid and powerful instruments for obesity, which are needed to estimate its causal effects, are rare. This paper contributes to the literature by using a novel instrument: genetic risk score, which reflects the predisposition to higher body mass index across many genetic loci. We estimate IV models of the effect of BMI on labor market outcomes using Finnish data that have many strengths: genetic information, measured body mass index, and administrative earnings records that are free of the problems associated with nonresponse, self-reporting error or top-coding.
