Étude néotectonique des rivages occidentaux du canal d'Atalanti (Grèce centrale) by Théodora Rondogianni-Tsiambaou( )

1 edition published in 1984 in French and held by 3 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The western coasts of Atalanti canal (regions of Locris and Beotoia) are characterized by intense tectonics and high seismicity. The studied area belongs to pelagonian geotectonic zone. The younger deposits of Pliocene and Pleistocene age have mainly a lacustrine and fluviolacustrine origin. The marine formations of upper Pleistocene-Holocene age outcrop in narrow zones close to recent coasts. This area was found to be under a regime of tensional stresses from Pliocene up-today. This extensional tectonics was interrupted by a compressional episode of lower Pleistocene age. As it was determined, the first extension during Pliocene had a NE-SW mean direction, while the second one from middle Pleistocene up Today, a NW-SE direction. The recent tensional stresses acting in the studied region cause the reactivation of preexisting normal faults and the manifestation of strong earthquakes. The Martino-Atalanti fault, 60 km long is the major seismotectonic feature of this region which was reactivated in 1894 with disastrous results. Finally, the geological - tectonic map of Plio-Pleistocene deposits is presented in a scale 1 :500.000
