At the turn of the 9th century Japan the still young dynasty of "Mikado" is attempting to lead an expedition against the aboriginal Emishi in northeastern Japan. In the capital city of Japan Sakanoue no Tamuramaro meets a wanderer "Northern Wolf." He is Aterui, young leader of Emishi, who was cursed and cast out from his tribe. In order to protect his tribe from the invasion of Mikado, Aterui decides to go back to his tribe. Mikado appoints Sakanoue no Tamuramaro to lead the northern expedition troops. Aterui and Tamuramaro meet again as foes
