The purpose of this scientific expedition, sponsored by mining magnate and philanthropist William Austin Horn, and with Charles Winnecke as commander and surveyor, was to examine the MacDonnell Ranges on the not unreasonable premise that 'when the rest of the Continent was submerged the elevated portions of the McDonnell [sic] Range existed as an island, and that consequently older forms of life might be found in the more inaccessible parts'. This in fact proved not to be the case, but the expedition (of some fourteen weeks and 2000 camel miles undertaken between May and August 1894) was an outstanding success. 'It was not the intention ... to explore a new region ... But in the pursuit of natural history the expedition split into independent groups and explored undiscovered areas, thus filling in more of the blank spaces in this vast region' (Feeken, Feeken and Spate). 'These volumes constitute one of the most substantial contributions in nineteenth-century Australian exploration [but perhaps more importantly, the expedition is] a landmark in anthropological history because it resulted in [Baldwin] Spencer meeting Frank Gillen' (Mulvaney)

Upper Great Lakes Connecting Channels interlaboratory performance evaluation study, QM-10 : PAHs in ampules and water : final
report by
W. C. Winnie Li(
)
3 editions published in 1987 in English and held by 7 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
"This report summarizes and evaluates the results from the tenth interlaboratory performance evaluation study, QM-10 which consisted of the analysis of PAHs in ampules and water. Results were received from five Canadian and four U.S. laboratories out of 14 participants. Overall, most data received from the participants were satisfactory and comparable for the ampule samples but less precise and more erratic (low recoveries) for the spiked water samples. All participating laboratories have been provided with appropriate feed-back"--Management Perspective, page i

Upper Great Lakes Connecting Channels interlaboratory QA/QC study : QM-1 : PCBs, OCs and CHs in ampules : final report by
W Horn(
)
2 editions published in 1986 in English and held by 6 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
"The Upper Great Lakes Connecting Channels (UGLCC) have been designated 'Areas of Concern' by the International Joint Commission. A Canada-U.S- binational study, involving the identification and assessment of the environmental impacts of toxic substances, in those areas, was initiated in 1984. In order to assist analytical laboratories contributing data to the UGLCC study, to generate reliable and accurate data, a Quality Management Work Group was formed and 13 interlaboratory studies were implemented. This report describes the results from the first interlaboratory performance evaluation study, QM-1, which consisted of the analysis of standard solutions of PCB, 12 organochlorine insecticides and 13 chlorinated hydrocarbons. Results were received from 9 out of 16 participating laboratories (5 Canadian, 4 U.S.). Overall, with the exception of one laboratory, most of the data received from the participants were satisfactory and comparable"--Management perspective

Continued Analysis of a Capacity Concept for Runway and Final-Approach Path Airspace(
Book
)
1 edition published in 1971 in English and held by 2 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
In a previous study, a 'maximum throughput rate' concept for the capacity of a runway and its associated final-approach path airspace was developed, represented by a simple mathematical formula, and given illustrative application in the context of a stream of IFR CTOL landings. The present report continues this line of investigation. The capacity formulation is generalized to admit aircraft-type-dependent separation minima. Algebraic tests are developed to aid in identifying both those situations in which in-air separation requirements are the dominant limiters of capacity, and the opposite extreme in which long occupancy of the runway by arriving planes is the critical bottleneck. Simplified upper bounds on (numerical) capacity are derived. An analysis is made of the capacity-increasing potential of certain types of deviation from first-come-first-served acceptance of aircraft. (Author)
