"In an intimate and domestic way, these letters describe what happened in Gaul after the final Roman withdrawal just before AD 480. They illustrate how literary life continued under barbarian rule, and demonstrate how well-to-do Gauls responded to the changing times. They provide priceless insights not only into the private and public lives of individual letter writers, but also into live and activities in Visigothic Gaul at the local level in general. In this regard, they suggest how little impact the Visigoths actually had. More than any other source, these letters tell the tale of the 'end of Roman Gaul'."--Jacket

It analyses the nature and aspect of his correspondence, studies his language and style, and recalls how his work was transmitted to us by a 9th century manuscript. After recension of the successive editions published to date, it indicates the principles leading to the present establishment of the text, its translation and comments. the text of the letters is given, with a critical addendum, followed, for the first time, by a French translation, which has he been made as clear and accessible, on a first reading, as permits the necessity of respecting the affected and tormented style of Ruricius of Limoges. The third part of the dissertation is given over to a detailed comment of each letter, with historical, sociological and linguistic remarks, which enlighten the sense of the text, and precise the extent of the testimonial and all the problems posed by this correspondence and its author
Rurice de Limoges : lettres, introduction, texte critique, traduction et commentaire by Yvonne Bontoux( )

1 edition published in 1996 in French and held by 1 WorldCat member library worldwide
