Modification program for the Nevis syn chrocyclotron by James Rainwater( Book )

3 editions published in 1966 in English and held by 2 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The plan envisages an eventual conversion to 500-600 MeV proton kinetic energy and> or = 10 microamp time average current. It is hoped to obtain a high extraction efficiency which will permit a 10 to 50 microamp time average external proton beam current having a high duty factor, with corresponding high intensity pion and muon beams. This program will involve a major building and shielding, etc. extension. It is planned to use spiral ridge iron shims with <B(r)> (average over azimuth) increasing with r more slowly than for isochronism, but by an amount which will give a greatly reduced rf frequency swing. This should permit a repetition rate of about 300/sec. The design study will rely strongly on the use of one-fifth scale cyclotron model magnet for field studies. Using a vacuum system, ion source, frequency modulated rf system, etc., it will also be used for central region studies using spiral ridge iron shimming. This model operating FM cyclotron may also be ued for a partial investigation of extraction modes where the protons would emerge along a high spiral angle valley field contour. (Author)
THEORY OF MULTIPLE COULOMB SCATTERING FROM EXTENDED NUCLEI( Book )

2 editions published in 1954 in English and held by 2 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Two independent methods are described for calculating the multiple scattering distribution for projected angle scattering resulting when very high energy charged particles traverse a thick scatterer. The single scattering law for projected angle scattering is taken to be the Rutherford scattering law for projected angle scattering modified at small angles by electron shielding and at large angles by a nuclear form factor F[sub n]([phi]/[phi][sub o]) which gives the effect of the finite nuclear size. The calculations can be carried through for any reasonable choice of F[sub n] and have been carried through for two suggested choices of F[sub n] for the examples of fast [mu]-meson scattering in 2 cm and 5 cm thick lead slabs, with good agreement for the two methods of calculation. The results are compared with the theories of Moliere and Olbert

Mu mesonic atom studies of ti, fe, cu, zn, tl, pb, bi by William Frati( Book )

2 editions published between 1961 and 1962 in English and held by 1 WorldCat member library worldwide

Results of a precision re-evaluation of the mumesonic x-ray transition energies for Tl, Pb, Bi, Ti, Fe, Cu, and Zn are presented. The 2p-1s and 3d-2p transition regions were studied for Tl, Pb, and Bi, and the 2p fine structure splitting was determined with good precision from both sets of measurements. The Tl, Pb, and Bi transition energies were determined to about 0.2%, while the 2p state fine structure splitting was determined to within 2 to 3%. The results are in good agreement with the theoretically predicted values of Ford and Wills, based on the charge distributions implied from the high energy electron scattering experiments. (Author)
