English: Virtualization is one of the long term solutions to face Internet ossification problem which is unable to support new services due to the lack of coordination between different Internet Service Providers. By allowing several heterogeneous networks to share a physical substrate, virtualization provides flexibility, diversity and promises security and increased manageability. In this thesis a flexible and technology independent system is presented including the required mechanisms and modules inside the network management system block to manage independently virtual networks resources. The system allows providing quality of service and traffic engineering to different traffic classes within a virtual network. An evaluation of the system is done through a set of models each one regarding a different module used, Virtual Network Control, Virtual Network Reconfiguration, Call Access Control, Background Monitoring System and Dynamic Resource Allocation, to prove that their role is needed to make the system provide the qualities mentioned. Some general recommendations are given about the system, and specifically when squatting occurs evaluating whether the use of the Squatting Kicking Model is suitable for the proposed system. Finally conclusions and future work are commented concluding the content of the present thesis

Castellano: El desarrollo del proyecto consistió en el diseño e implementación de un sistema automatizado de monitorización enfocado a evaluar la calidad de servicio. Dicho proyecto fue planteado por el Departamento de Infraestructuras de Backoffice de la empresa de telecomunicaciones UPCnet, para la solución de un problema de detección en tiempo real de fallos y retardos dentro de los principales servicios críticos de la UPC (Atenea, Prisma, etc.). El objetivo principal del proyecto es cuantificar de manera precisa la percepción del usuario final al momento de utilizar cualquier servicio prestado por la empresa. Con ello, se lograría evaluar la calidad de servicio que percibe el usuario y mejorar el tiempo de resolución de incidencias. El proyecto abarca la construcción de un software unificado capaz de controlar la latencia de cada servicio crítico de la empresa e interpretarla dentro de tres umbrales: BUENO, REGULAR o MALO. Cada umbral define un tiempo específico dentro del cual se puede saber los lapsos normales de un servicio para ejecutar una acción específica, como enviar un correo, o autenticarse en un sitio web. Sumado a esto era necesario la creación de un sistema de graficación en tiempo real que permitiera la visualización de los tiempos de latencia para analizar el comportamiento en períodos críticos dentro de la UPC (como el período de matrículas). El resultado final del proyecto tenia que proyectarse en un monitor (Plafó de Serveis) que mostrase iconos de los principales servicios y un semáforo por cada uno de ellos que indicara el estado de funcionamiento. (Verde: buen servicio, amarillo: servicio regular, rojo: mal servicio)

English: the Mobile Communications Research Group as part of the Signal Theory and Communications Department of the Polytechnic University of Catalonia, in order to keep up with the latest technological trends in the mobile networks field, saw the need to study and analyze the new emerging mobile standards such as LTE (Long Term Evolution), and through Atoll, a mobile network radio planning and optimization software, was sought to evaluate and understand the different characteristics of LTE in a more practical manner, opening the possibility to instruct more easily to the future generations in the telecommunications field. This project was initially based on planning a LTE network, which was then used to analyze strategies of spectrum management such as the interference coordination between cells (ICIC) and frequency reuse schemes with a reuse factor equal to 1 and 3, by comparing their performance with respect to the throughput and carrier to interference plus noise ratio achievable levels in both links. In addition, was studied the behavior of ICIC strategy for different scenarios generated from the increased user density, changing the configuration of services, and the combined use with MIMO's techniques. Among the most important outcomes it is highlighted that the use of ICIC strategy in an environment where it is not necessary becomes prejudicial to the system performance and that the main advantage is reflected in a larger coverage area in comparison to other strategies

Efficient analysis of 2D antenna arrays using the ASM-MBF method by Sergio Amaya Maldonado( )

The analysis of large-scaled 2D finite planar arrays with the Method of Moments relying on the RWG basis functions requires a huge amount of memory for saving the equation system and a long computation time for solving the surface current distribution. In this project, the Array Scanning Method - Macro Basis Function (ASM-MBF) method created by Craeye is implemented in an existing MoM's code in order to verify the reduction of the equation system keeping a good accuracy. Some improvements have been implemented in the existing code in order to analyze arrays with rectangular and skew lattices. The time spent in the impedance matrix construction has also been reduced. A program for solving 2D infinite arrays has been created for obtaining the infinite surface current distributions necessary for the implementation of the ASM-MBF method. Finally, the definitive program has been tested with arrays of dipole and bowtie antennas. In both cases, the computation time is reduced without affecting the accuracy of the input impedance

Català: en sorgir el sistema LTE de quarta generació de telefonia mòbil i a més fer-se disponible al mercat eines que permeten modelar aquestes xarxes, va sorgir la necessitat d'estendre els coneixements teòrics a l'àmbit pràctic per observar el comportament d'aquestes xarxes sota diferents condicions i establir comparacions amb els resultats esperats. En aquest sentit, el present Projecte de Fi de Carrera té com a objectiu la planificació d'una xarxa LTE en l'eina ATOLL per crear situacions que permetin analitzar el rendiment de la xarxa en emprar diferents estratègies de Packet Scheduling. La metodologia utilitzada en el projecte va consistir en una primera fase d'investigació teòrica, no només de les especificacions del sistema LTE sinó també dels algoritmes emprats en el programa per dur a terme els diferents càlculs necessaris referents a les funcions de gestió dels recursos ràdios i obtenció dels throughputs per usuari, per cel·les i totals de la xarxa. Posteriorment es va emprendre la fase de planificació de la xarxa LTE escollint la ciutat de Barcelona com a zona per al desplegament, es va procedir a l'optimització de la xarxa i finalment es van realitzar diferents simulacions i prediccions per avaluar les estratègies Round Robin, Proportional Fair, Proportional Demand i Maximum C/I. Com a resultat general del projecte es va aconseguir assolir un alt domini de l'eina ATOLL en la planificació de xarxes LTE, i obtenir el criteri per avaluar y establir paràmetres del programa segons valors realistes que permetin obtenir resultats d'acord amb els documents teòrics
JA(G)OBS Simulator Implementation of the main features of the routing protocol by Rui Pedro Miranda Batalha( )

English: Optical Burst Switching (OBS) is an optical switching paradigm that has been re-gaining attention in the last few years after its boom around the year 2000. This paradigm is able to bring together the present technology (avoiding the optical buffer technology hurdles) and what is envisaged for future networks (packet-based optical switching). However it lacks a well-defined control plane that can keep up with quality of service (QoS) demands by Internet applications and end-to-end connectivity among multiple switching domains controlled by a single control instance. Generalized Multi-Protocol Layer Switching (GMPLS) is a technology that can give the missing link to OBS. It is the extension of the Multi-Protocol Layer Switching (MPLS) which was designed for IP networks to introduce fast forwarding and Traffic Engineering (TE). GMPLS evolves from MPLS to deal with non-IP networks, e.g. SDH and WDM. However, it does not handle OBS so far. This Master Thesis contributes towards this GMPLS-OBS interoperability by the development of some features to the Java Event-Driven Simulator of the GMPLS-OBS architecture called JA(G)OBS. This thesis comes up in sequence of another UPC-ISCTE Master Thesis of João Baião from September 2010, who implemented some of the basic features of the GMPLS Signaling protocol in the simulator. In particular, this Master Thesis will focus on the implementation of the GMPLS Routing protocol basic features in the simulator and to deploy a Graphical User Interface (GUI) for the simulator. The GMPLS Routing protocol considered in the simulator is the Open Shortest Path First with Traffic Engineering (OSPF-TE) which is one of the standards of GMPLS routing

The LTI property is proven to be a valid assumption for normal diffusion-based single/multi-transmitter scenarios. Different pulse-based modulation techniques are compared by means of throughput, operation range, energy requirements and ISI, and the optimal pulse shape for these modulations is provided. Finally, interferences are evaluated in a broadcast communication scenario and diffusion-based noise is observed and assessed with reference to already proposed stochastic models. Castellà: Este proyecto trata sobre el problema de la estimación del canal de transmisión mediante métodos no asistidos por datos (NDA - Non Data-Aided), para el caso concreto de la transmisión de información utilizando la modulación OFDM (Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing), comparando su efectividad y convergencia con los métodos asistidos por datos (DA - Data-Aided) a través de simulaciones Matlab®. Los métodos NDA son conocidos también como métodos ciegos, ya que obtienen una estimación del canal de transmisión a partir de los datos recibidos sin necesidad de conocer previamente los datos enviados, a diferencia de los métodos DA, que necesitan secuencias conocidas a priori por el transmisor y por el receptor (y, por tanto, introduciendo una penalización en la eficiencia espectral y en la capacidad del sistema) para obtener una estimación. El gran atractivo de los métodos ciegos radica en que permiten evitar esta penalización. Por el contrario, los métodos ciegos suelen ser más lentos en términos de convergencia y más complejos computacionalmente. Para comparar ambos tipos de aproximaciones al problema en el caso particular de la modulación OFDM, que transforma el efecto convolutivo del canal de transmisión en un conjunto de canales paralelos multiplicativos, se estudian y comparan los métodos clásicos que utilizan portadoras piloto (que transportan símbolos conocidos) con dos familias de métodos de estimación ciega (basados en la ortogonalidad del subespacio de ruido y del subespacio de señal de la matriz de autocorrelación de los símbolos recibidos y en la propiedad de alfabeto finito de los símbolos transmitidos, respectivamente) en términos de error cuadrático medio y de probabilidad de error de bit para diferentes constelaciones de señal (BPSK, QPSK, 16-QAM y 64-QAM) y diferentes modelos estadísticos de canal, con especial interés en sus capacidades de convergencia. El objetivo final del proyecto es discutir en qué circunstancias estos métodos ciegos son un sustituto aceptable de los métodos de sincronismo clásicos
