Party girl by
Nicholas Ray(
Visual
)
1 edition published in 1958 in English and held by 0 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
At the centre is a love story between a morally compromised lawyer and a cynical 'party girl' both living fettered lives in Chicago during the Prohibition years. Party Girl was a cause celebre for the place of mise en scene in the 'auteur theory'. Nicholas Ray tried to make the most out of an assigned, indifferent script through the use of colour, widescreen, performance and kitschy Metro sets to create what he described as the enclosed 'kind of bizarre reality' of the characters. Ray's biographer Bernard Eisenschitz comments that Ray ignored the studio-imposed thematic conventions of the script ('the idea of doing what is right and therefore lawful'), instead placing 'the accent ... on the duplicitous relationships between the characters, on the maze of compromises in which they evolve'
