Los cuadros tromboembolicos son complicaciones frecuentes en pacientes hospitalizados, como lo demuestra la literatura norteamericana revisada. En el presente trabajo multicentrico realizado en 500 pacientes de riesgo trombotico alto, asintomatico paratrombosis, provenientes de diferentes hospitales de la capital y de dos ciudades importantes, se utilizo el Test del Dimero D como marcador plasmatico para Trombosis Venosa Profunda y Embolia Pulmonar. Se encontro una positividad de 295 (59 por ciento) casos y 205 (41 por ciento) negativos, como resultados generales. En las especialidades medicas 56 por ciento de positividad y en las quirurgicas 66,8 por ciento. Hallazgos que demuestran que los pacientes hospitalizados de alto riesgo para trombosis, poseen una elevada incidencia de este marcador plasmatico y nos induce a pensar que en su mayoria estan produciendo cierto grado de trombosis aun sin sintomatologia evidente.
