The Earls of Ranfurly were the Knox family, anciently of Glascow, who purchased Dungannon in 1692. Thomas Knox (1729-1818) held the titles of Baron Welles and Viscount Northland; he was governor of County Tyrone. His son, Thomas Knox (1754-1840), was the first earl, receiving the title in 1831
