The third Ealing production in Australia was carefully researched by Watt working with Rex Rienits and a small team of historians and is distinguished by its reconstruction of the Ballarat goldfields (on location near Singleton, N.S.W.), well staged action and a strong supporting cast. The leader of the miners' revolt against the colonial authorities, Peter Lalor, played by Rafferty, is presented as a man of doubts and principles rather than as the charismatic rebel leader
