Abstract:

Discusses the fate of the Jewish community of St. Pölten, Austria, between 1938-45; before 1938 the community counted 1,200 members. The Anschluss was accompanied by antisemitic agitation in the local press. Describes the exclusion of Jews from social and professional life, pressure for emigration, and the "Kristallnacht" pogrom, during which 137 Jewish residents were arrested. Some of these Jews were imprisoned in Dachau, from where release was possible only for those who had emigration visas. Deals with Aryanization and confiscation of Jewish property, the fate of partners in mixed marriages and "Mischlinge", and the deportation of Jews to concentration and extermination camps. Pp. 193-252 relate the fate of nine Jews from St. Pölten. Pp. 265-295 contain a list of the Jews who lived in St. Pölten in 1938, including birth date, profession, and details on their fate.
