During the partition of 1947, Boota Singh's village and surrounding areas come in the grips of riots. Zainab, a Muslim girl, chased by Sikh youths, runs into Boota Singh seeking protection. Boota Singh marries her to meet the villagers demand that she can't stay otherwise. In 1952, when India and Pakistan agree to exchange all women who were left behind in riots, Zainab had to be sent back to Pakistan.
