Negative taken of Pickens William Black, Jr. with a plane that he built. Pickens William Black, Jr. was the son of Pickens Black who established the town of Blackville in Jackson County, Arkansas. Pickens William Black, Jr. was born June 3, 1905 in Blackville, Arkansas and died April 16, 1980 at the same home in Blackville. His education included Blackville Training School, Philander Smith College in Little Rock, Pulaski County, Arkansas, Virginia Union University, Wilberforce University and Hampton Institute. Pickens Black, Jr. was a graduate of Virginia Union University and the first black aviator licensed to fly. He owned a big plane, but before buying it he had built his own plane only to have the government forbid him to fly it. Pickens built and repaired planes in his hanger in Blackville. He belonged to the Elks Club, the Kappa Alpha Psi fraternity and the Maple Chapel Methodist Church. Following his funeral at St. Paul's African Methodist Episcopal Church, he was buried in the Oddfellow Cemetery at Auvergne, Jackson County, Arkansas
