Correspondence, drafts and research materials for writings, course materials, biographical material, posters, and other papers relating to Margulis's career as a biologist, evolutionary theorist, author, and educator. Primarily documents her pursuits as a science author and includes research materials and drafts of articles and books such as Acquiring Genomes : A Theory of the Origins of Species (2002) coauthored with her son, Dorion Sagan. Also includes materials for research grants funded by the U.S. National Aeronautics and Space Administration and files pertaining to Margulis's teaching career at Boston University and the University of Massachusetts Amherst. Papers collected by her student and graduate assistant Betsey Dexter Dyer also concern Margulis's years at Boston University, as well as documenting a field survey in Baja California, Mexico
