Each page (but not the endpapers) has been brushed with gesso. The leaves of the text have then been torn out parallel to the spine, the first a few mm. from it. Each subsequent leaf has been torn out slightly farther from the spine, until the last leaf is missing only a few mm. parallel to its foredge. The text block as altered thus slopes from left to right. It presents a textured surface formed by the torn edges, with bits of text and ill. showing through the gesso where the foredges of pages as altered extend beyond those of pages closer to the spine
