Emotional survival for law enforcement : a course for law enforcement officers & their families

This presentation has five main segments summarized as follows : 1. Police work changes people. Because officers are not trained to deal with psychological stresses of the job, they often adopt dysfunctional coping strategies. These can damage their agency's moral and public image as well as ruin the officer's lives. 2. Unknown risk permeates the working life of law enforcement officers. This creates a physical state of hyper-vigilance on duty and a reflexive physical letdown similar to depression off duty. The daily swing between the physical states can seriously compromise the quality of the officer's personal time. 3. Officer's disengagement from their personal lives is accompanied by an over-investment in work. The linkage of the officer's sense of self with the job role, over which they have little control, in turn creates a sense of victimization. 4. A sense of victimization can lead officer's away from their core values, often with tragic results. 5. The keys to emotional survival : proactive personal time management; multiple personal roles outside of work; healthy diet; adequate sleep and physical exercise
