"The commercials tell us, 'YOU SUCK'" : how the advertising and marketing industries have contributed to the low self-esteem of American adolescent girls and women

"It has been effectively documented that American advertising and marketing industries have had and continue to have an ever-increasing impact on the development of popular culture and society. As technology advances, so does dependence on it in personal and profession life and increased opportunities for advertisers to sell their wares. American girls and women have traditionally learned the rules of what it meant to be feminine through the established social and cultural institutions. This has now changed and expanded, however, to include those feminine behaviors defined and taught by print and electronic media through advertising and marketing. It has also been well documented that American adolescent girls are increasingly troubled by low self-esteem and suffering significant social, physical, and psychological consequences. It is the intention of this paper to draw a direct connection between those adolescent girls and women who experience negative self-esteem and the role and responsibility of advertising and marketing, be it intentional or unintentional, in contributing to that outcome for American females"--Abstract
