David Roche, University of California, Berkeley (Degree granting institution)
An ethnomusicological study of the music of an Indian tribal (adivasi) community within the Bhil culture zone of northwestern India, Devi Amba's Drum weaves methodologies of chant analysis, phenomenology of folk religious ritual, including an organological review of the sacred dhak drum, and neuropsychology, in the analysis of acoustic effects and auditory perception, to argue for a cultural survival model based on the dramaturgical evidence of the Dhak ritual complex
