The relationship between role and identity, as elaborated by the role and identity theory, is one of congruence. It follows then, that women who are engaged in masculine activities possess a masculine identity. This is the basis of role reversal theory. The nature of this relationship, between role and identity, has been explored in this study. In the process two theories, role reversal and role extention, have been tested. 225 women in six groups, white-collar male dominated occupations, white-collar female dominated occupations, blue-collar female dominated occupations, incarcerated Type I criminals, and incarcerated Type II criminals, participated in this study. BSRI, DHII--self, DHII--ideal, PAQ--stereotype, ISRO, and the Study of Values were the measures used to investigate the questions proposed, whereas IQ and SES were covaried. The indications of a masculine identity and non non-traditional sex-role orientation were found to be confined to white-collar workers in male dominated occupations. The other groups did not differ from each other on any of the other variables. The results are discussed in terms of the white-collar workers' greater social awareness and its possible antecedents
