Abstract:

Abstract: There is a gap in the literature regarding qualitative studies that assess the current situation of mental health programs and services that are offered by California public schools, especially with Latino-American youth. The purpose of this study was to obtain knowledge from school based mental health providers (SBMHP), such as school psychologists and counselors, regarding the overall view of mental health services in schools, number and availability of services, and in addition, how SBMHPs encourage students to use mental health services. Fifteen SBMHPs completed a survey, which was qualitatively analyzed. The results of the study indicated that most SBMHPs have a generally positive perception of mental health services in schools, but expressed a more negative view when asked specific questions. Secondly, there seems to be limited encouragement and use of mental health services in schools and lack of data or statistics kept on who gets serviced, and how services are delivered. Finally, this study shows that the number and availability of mental health services continue to be a problem facing many students today.
