Abstract:

Abstract: This thesis argues that by applying my ability to manufacture mental images, recall and adapt stored images, and use these images to arouse emotions and thoughts in the character of William Hard, from Mac Wellman's play, The Hyacinth Macaw, I was able to connect with and effectively bring the character to life. Chapter 1 focuses on the acting methodologies of Michael Chekhov and George Shdanoff and how they differ from Stanislavsky's emotional memory based acting system. Chapter 2 focuses on my use of Chekhov's and Shdanoff's techniques in rehearsal and performance while creating and performing the role of Mr. William Hard in The Hyacinth Macaw. Chapter 3 reports on how this creative process and use of imaging techniques successfully assisted me in discovering, experiencing and connecting with the character of Mr. William Hard.
