Abstract:

The African American photograph collection is an artificially created collection acquired through a number of small accessions. The collection contains photographs of African American individuals from the 1880s to the 1960s, primarily in the South. Images depict fire-fighters, entertainers, domestic workers, families, children, graduation classes, college students, and congregational members. The collection includes a number of portraits taken by African American photographers, including Carl Van Vechten and Addison Scurlock. The collection also contains a photograph album compiled by a Morehouse College student.
