Title from caption.
Founded by public leader Mrs. Sarah Josepha Hale, this magazine was the first women's periodical to survive more than five years. The editor's favorite cause was female education, which she emphasized in every issue. Despite this underlying theme most fiction and poetry was very sentimental. Mrs. Hale felt the magazine should not be exclusively devoted to "female literature" and included reviews of books and short stories, music, biographies and many articles on phrenology. Starting with the fourth volume a fashion plate and a piece of music were included in most issues. Cf. American periodicals, 1741-1900.
Description: 3 volumes : illustrations ; 23 cm
