Abstract:

In this pathbreaking history Countryman synthesizes recent scholarship on the popular dimensions of the American Revolution and emphasizes that the Revolution was not a united movement but was made up of coalitions as the revolutionaries faced the issues of their time. He explores the participation in and the effects of the Revolution on ordinary people -- a Boston shoemaker, a New England farmwife, a worried merchant, a South Carolina slave -- and highlights the changes in social relationships during the period. By linking the crowd actions of the 1760s to the political debate of the 1770s and 1780s, he demonstrates the thematic unities of the period, and shows how the changes of the era went beyond institutions, affected the lives of all Americans, and transformed the character of American life and culture. ISBN 0-8090-2563-9 : $15.95.
