Abstract:

The work of folk singers truly resonates with people on all walks of life, and their legacy is astounding. Recorded from 1983-1985 and produced by 20th Century Home Entertainment, this program showcases musical legends performing classic American songs whose messages and compositions range from subtle evocation to sweeping and radical. Hosted by Theodore Bikel, the film includes some fantastic features: Jean Richie accompanies herself on the dulcimer to "March Down to Old Tennessee" and the story ballad, "They Call Me Jackeroo"; blind guitar master, Doc Watson offers unadorned versions of "Fix Me a Pallet" and "I Got the Blues"; Hoyt Axton wonderfully renders "Greenback Dollar"; and a newer group, the Blue Flame String B, revive the authentic folk sound with "Aunt Caroline Dyer Blues." Enjoy additional performances by The Limeliters, Leadbelly, Burl Ives, Glenn Yarbrough, New Christy Minstrels, and many more.
