Abstract:

Program 5 traces the evolution of American animation from the earliest feature, Winsor McCay's Gertie the Dinosaur, and the genius of Walt Disney, to the computer generated megahits of studios like Pixar. As the first section notes, CGI is also being used to create special effects in live-action motion pictures. Winsor McCay is credited with establishing film techniques that became standard in early animated films. The tradition in this first age of animation was to create animated films from famous cartoon characters like Popeye, Felix the Cat, or Bugs Bunny. Walt Disney was the first to create original animated characters: Mickey Mouse, Pluto, Goofy, and Donald Duck. After several career setbacks, Disney introduced psychologically real animated characters in his "Three Little Pigs" and the classic, "Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs". With the later, the full-length animated feature was born. Chuck Jones is introduced as a master in creating characters and of filmmaking in general. His version of Daffy Duck in "Duck Amuck" shows the close relationship between an animator and his characters. Other famous Jones characters include Road Runner, Willie E. Coyote, Pepe le Pew and animated adaptations of Dr. Seuss characters. The final section on Pixar Animation Studios, praises the ingenuity of the team that created the first computer-generated feature film, "Toy Story," and continues to produce masterpieces with fully realized characters and intriguing plots.
