Abstract:

The studies collected in this volume explore Annie Ernaux's "engagement with writing." The authors attempt to define the contours of this new form of engagement (political, human, social, corporeal, and sensible) that Ernaux has invented, especially considering it in the light of the concept of "implication." Five fundamental dimensions of Ernaux's writing are also analyzed: her desire to "descend into the social reality" and to take as her subject that which is traditionally considered to be "beneath" literature; her position in comparison to a feminist engagement; the articulation between identity and otherness in the political dimension of her work; the presence in the world of a writer "traversed by others," and, finally, the way in which her work engages and transforms the reader.
