Abstract:

The mountains and glaciers of Westland Tai Poutini National Park an Aoraki / Mount Cook National Park together make up New Zealand's most popular alpine climbing region. This guidebook describes virtually every climbing route and access route in both parks. All new routes since the 2001 edition have been added, and the Cook / Weheka, Copland, Douglas, and Karangarua valleys are covered for the first time. Specific attention is given to how routes have been affected by climate change, and how they could be affected by glacier recession in the future. These two important national parks provide mountaineers with a diverse range of possibilities due to their unique variety of terrain, accessibility, and micro-climates. Technical climbers, general mountaineers, and transapline trampers will find no shortage of mountain adventures here. Keen tahr and chamois hunters will also find the information on range crossings and access to the tops invaluable. Beautifully illustrated with hundreds of colour photos and route diagrams, and with clearly described descent options for the popular climbs, this is the essential guidebook for anyone planning a trip into this special area of New Zealand's Southern Alps / Ka Tiritiri o te Moana.
