Abstract:
During 1860 and 1861 state-appointed commissioners travelled around the slave south attempting to persuade uncommitted slave states to join in an effort to destroy the Union. Dew argues that the commissioner's white supremacist ideology proves that the Civil War was fundamentally about slavery.
