Abstract:

This short documentary examines the plight of the citizens of the small town of São Braz, in the state of Bahia in Brazil. Until 1971 they lived happily as fishermen, taking an abundant harvest of fish, crabs, schrimp and oysters from the river that flows by their town and into the Bay of All Saints. But in that year a paper-making plant was built in the town and the toxic runoff, the "black water," from the plant is steadily poisoning the river, killing all the life in it and depriving the people of food and their preferred livelihood.
