Abstract:

Since its foundation the Memory and Human Rights Museum has received a significant number of donations of arpilleras (traditional Chilean craft displaying embroidery and applique on burlap cloth) from around the worlds as from institutions in Chile. These popular needlework pictures of everyday scenes played an essential role during Pinochet's dictatorial regime as testimonial records that documented the social and political events and experiences of the Chilean people during the violent repression. "The twelve collections presented in this catalogue became part of the museum by March of 2011. They are related to solidarity actions in Chile and to the strategies for survival and support used by women who were relatives of political prisoners and disappeared detainees." --Page 112.
