Abstract:

"I want to reflect on the work of three ... writers of imaginative fiction in English, all of them living, each of them directly reacting against the faith of his fathers--and against the faith of their mothers as well. Those three writers are the American, Philip Roth, the Irishman, Colm Tóibín, and the British Indian, Salman Rushdie. All at one time or another have outraged their former co-religionists. I wish to examine some of the writings of each of these contemporary writings to see what they criticize about their ancestral faith, and to interrogate what people of Jewish, Christian and Muslim faith might learn from these critiques."--Page 2.
