Abstract:

The collection contains nine drawings, seven letters, two postcards, one publication notice, and one magazine. The drawings depict a semi-nude man seated on a rock, a nude man (rear view) carrying a load of branches, a primitive warrior carrying weapons, a boudoir scene with one figure in bed and one about to enter a bath, a reclining female nude, a standing female nude seen from the back, a female figure and a dragon in a mountain landscape, a nude female bust accompanied by several stylized self-portraits, and an unfinished drawing of a faun seated before a headless and armless nude female.

Spare writes to novelist and critic Desmond Coke whom the artist is hoping to interest in his work; art dealer A.S. Watt writes to Coke about an exhibition of Spare's work. Also includes two postcard order forms for The youth and the sage (illustrated by Spare), one with a note signed from the author Warren Retlaw; and a publication notice for The images & oracles of Austin Osman Spare, by Kenneth Grant. Also includes a copy of The golden hind, a quarterly magazine of art and literature (Oct. 1922) containing drawings by Spare.
